5 spoons in a row looking at a 6th. Who are making all of the key decision for the club? Any of the board members apart from Chris Schmidt have any football club experience?

Also, how can a club win a flag in 2015 then go on to pick up a wooden spoon? Looks to be a cultural problem... complacency.

I don't think it's the Board Members, Wild West. There are good people at Westies doing their absolute best. I think it's the cartel who took over Westies 6 years ago now, is it, promising everything and delivering nothing. Not sure anything can be done about that....

MAUGHAN THIEM KIA OVAL, Friday 29th March, 2:30pm
Woodville-West Torrens
133 20.13
West Adelaide
69 10.9

Our Round 1 contest against Woodville provided us the exciting opportunity to get our 2024 off to a positive start.

We were good in the contest early and were able to play football in our front half. We were able to generate multiple F50 entries but failed to capitalize on these chances. To Woodville’s credit, they were able to repel our offence and with quick transition and slick ball movement, were able to get the ascendancy going into quarter time.

The second quarter looked more how we want our game to be played, tough and clean around the contest, composed and direct with ball movement, and we played the exciting brand of football we know we are capable of. There were still a couple of moments from a defensive perspective that we need to get better at to limit the oppositions scoreboard impact.

The third quarter was frustrating. We got our contest method right, but we couldn’t generate any control with ball in hand as we fell into the trap of playing ‘fast football’, playing into the hands of Woodville’s desired game style of high pressure, turnover and transition.

The final quarter was a disappointing way to finish the game. We couldn’t get any control with ball in hand as Woodville sweated on our mistakes and moved the ball forward freely and scored at will.

On review, the positives to take away from the game was that our best is very good, and we can do it! And that where we went wrong throughout the game is all in our control. Stay composed and take care of the ball.

Congratulations to our League debutants in Finn Higham, Oscar Kregar, Will Patton and Lachie Williams. A big congratulations as well to our Club first gamer Brady Searle. Huge reward for not only yourselves but your friends, family, your junior clubs and coaches who have supported you along the way.

A special thank you to Club Legend Peter Meuret for coming in to speak with our players on Wednesday night prior to the first game. This initiative from our Leadership Group is to help build connection to our past. Pete spoke with love and passion for our club.

We look forward to the opportunity to respond against Port Adelaide in Waikerie in Round 2.

Best: Josh Ryan, Jordan White, Kobe Ryan

Goals: D. McCormick, K. Ryan, J. Sinderberry (2), S. Frost, I. Johnson, O. Kregar, T. Morrish (1)

League Coach – Adam Hartlett
