It is with great sadness that the West Adelaide Football Club advises members and the wider SANFL community of the passing of Life Member, Mark Beswick.
Mark’s passion for, and commitment to, SANFL football was all-encompassing. Always a passionate Blood’s supporter, Mark was also the official SANFL historian. His unparalleled work for our club and the SANFL as historian and statistical guru was invaluable and his enthusiasm and love of our game was always obvious in the way he approached everything he did.
His father Kevin played over 100 games for West Adelaide and captained the club.
.
It is not possible to do justice to the contribution Mark has given to West Adelaide. In so many ways, Mark was the first port of call for so many of the answers football clubs need on a day-to-day basis
He will be sadly missed and our thoughts are very much with Christine, his children and family.
i find this very strange that this is on talking footy but not on this site
one great person of the club
and no comment from certain people close to the club
VALE Mark

Re: RIP
Very nice service & send off for Mark B today followed by a huge wake at the club.
An estimated 350 people packed the church & probably 150 odd came back to the club.
I think we received in excess of 20+ new memberships which was Mark’s wish.
Our sincerest wishes to Christine, the Kids & Kevin B & the extended families.

Lovely man, Jack. I played footy with one of his sons and he had the same rolling gait his father had. RIP.

I kept in contact with Craig via Facebook and bumping into him at various times
Very fine man who it always was a pleasure to chat with.
Very saddened by this news as taken too early like many good men

Those who remember Ron playing would have fond memories of a neat, skilful player who was a master of the stab-pass.
Magarey Medallist and great player, RIP, Ron.

Re: RIP
A personal Ron Benton story --- as a youngster I often stayed at my grandparent house on Gray Street in the West End (traditional home of Westies) and often had a kick in street with my Uncles and their mates ---- I never realized that they were Westies players they were just my uncles mates.
Anyway, late one night I got woken by this voice calling out Ickle, Ickle (grandfathers club nickname ??) they just rang and told me I won the Margery Medal --- next day I asked who that was and was surprised ------- Years later I had a chance to discuss this with Ron who thought it was very funny but typically modestly insisted that there were several team mates who should have got it before him.
Life Member Ron Benton your present duties to the West Adelaide Football Club has now come to an end but now you take on new duties as part of the rich history and fabric of our great club
RIP Life Member Ron Benton

I remember him well as a left-footed half forward flanker, and got to meet him when he was a team manager - terrific bloke, seems way too young.

Re: RIP
I remember the night at training when as Team Manager he ran his normal lap of the oval and complained of lack of breath --- even though he complained after much much pressure & threats he unwillingly spoke to the club doctor -- end story, 2 days later after heart operation and dying on the table more than once he admitted something wrong.
Another story that comes to mind is at training we were talking about footy nicknames and he stated to Lethal and I that he had a nickname that nobody knew about ---- aha, a challenge for Lethal and I --- the look on his face when at the next training session we dropped his long lost and (he thought) unknown nickname on him.
PS "Slops Bucket"
A friendly, charming and always calm man who was a pleasure to know now lost ---- so sad.

Re: RIP
Yes, oldfella, we placed a bucket of water and towels in front of the race and when Trevor came out, we said to him "watch out for that slops bucket, Haupty'
The look on his face was priceless.
It was great that after some time away from the club, he returned in recent years and had a good time catching up with his friends and past team-mates.
Correct, aldo, he was a left-footer, very good player and a great bloke.
Very sad news.
