Promising left-footer Simon Wong will also make his first appearance at league level after being named in a forward pocket. Wong, 19, is considered a hard runner as he boasts an athletic background.

Not expecting much this week.
The side looks a bit light on, especially the back line.

Think we are really going to struggle tomorrow night. Side looks very light on.

Re: West V South 5/4/2014
Lots of good players missing, but the ones out there were very ordinary.
Schmidt, Beech, Ezard and Stevens tried hard but that was it.
Will we get some players back for next week? If not we will be 0-2
Souths full forward, Eddy was very impressive, led our defenders a merry dance....... and marked everything!!
I have to add, Noarlunga Oval is the worst oval in the competition to watch a game of football. No wonder the crowds are always rubbish.

Very ordinary performance. However when you are missing 12 to 14 first choice players I would say
any club would struggle.
Need to get some players back very quickly otherwise the season could be gone before it starts.
Coming up against the Eagles next week will be even tougher than last night.
You would think both Webb and Fielke will play league next week.

Re: West V South 5/4/2014
First time post into this great forum...thanks.
Last night was the first time I have ever been to Panther Park....like a country oval but without the atmosphere!!! If there was 1750 people there last night there must have been 3 people in the boots of every car around the oval and they must have also included all those playing the pokies.
Completely lifeless. Wont be going back.
Key points I took out of this game:
* The Panthers had the opportunity of beating us by 10 - 15 goals last night. Unless we were missing 3 - 4 AFL listed players I think there is genuine cause for concern.
* The Panthers played with the spirit and tenacity we have played with over the last few years. They have improved...a lot!!
* I have not seen us that disorganised and deflated for a number of years.
* Some good new recruits.
* We seemed to show a lot of endeavour in the packs (Schmidt...well done) but once it got out they would split us open easily.
* I have not seen an opposition take so many contested marks in our defensive 50 for a long time...big worry.
Early times yet. But agree with Lachlan we need to get it togther soon.

Re: West V South 5/4/2014
Random thoughts.
1. Playing league is a lot harder than playing reserves.
2. Lost the rucks and lost the clearances.
3. Backline looked under the pump all night.
4. Lots of moves made and most did not work.
5. Bad loss in Daniel Caires 150th.
6. With Birss, Hartlett, Fielke, Hill, Hardy, Still, Green, Webb, Bricknell and a few others all to come back soon all is not lost.

We have a huge problem in ruck as Peter Nelson seemed to be well out of his depth. He was smashed in the centre square & around the ground & his marking is non existent. He just hasn't improved at all. Maybe time to give Tom Carter a run. Daniel Webb should be back in the league next week but will he play in ruck or as a marking forward?

Agree with Premiers 1983 that Nelson was beaten badly last. Night.
Both MacReadie and Tuck were very quiet also which is unusual given they were so consistent last year

Re: West V South 5/4/2014
Nelson has had a great pre season and is very fit but needs a lot of work with his ruckwork. The coaches need to spend time with him each session as running straight at someone and sticking a knee in their guts is a hard trick to teach a basketballer.
Carter did well in the reserves against a very tall opponent. He is strong and has a reasonable jump. Middleton is also a talent in the ruck with a great leap and good judgement.

Re: West V South 5/4/2014
How far away is our ruck recruit in Michael Bennett. I'm not suggesting he will play league footy anytime soon. It would be good to see him play..
I did think both Carter and Middleton played well yesterday. Middleton could play in defence given the Injury to Thompson.

Re: West V South 5/4/2014
Yes ST, Nelson certainly needs some training, you are right, he certainly seems reluctant to make body contact at the centre bounces.
Agree Lachlan, Middleton should be given a chance as a key defender, he certainly played well on Saturday. Keogh is not the answer in defence, he doesn't get enough body on his opponent. Carter is big & strong & deserves an opportunity.
What has happened to Bennett?
