Round 4 West v Glenelg

West Adelaide has regained first-choice ruckman Andre Parrella for its encounter with Glenelg at Hisense Stadium.

A late withdrawal in Round 3 due to an illness, Parrella has been thrust straight back into the side in place of Stuart Taverner, who was sent back to the Reserves.

The former Double Blues giant has been joined in the Bloods’ 25-man squad by fellow tall Jade Cleeland, midfielder Hugh Haysman and possible debutant Tom Morrish, who hails from Ouyen United in country Victoria.

Former Hawthorn utility Dallas Willsmore was unable to recover from his groin ailment to be considered for selection.

I really hope Haysman and Morrish play, our small forwards other than Johnson have done very little so far. Karpany and Kirk haven’t hit the scoreboard any where near enough.

Commiserations to the Umpires but credit where it is due they tried hard to assist the Bays --- on TV they said 17-7 around 3/4 time must have been more by the end --- good try but did not win a prize.

Just noticed that SANFL no long shows free kicks in the public available game stats ---- seems like a wise decision by them to protect the Umpires

This was won by a four quarter effort, but the difference was having a njey forward kicking 5 goals. For the first time in a long time, we dominated the clearances and had midfielders winning important touches. Brett Turner has improved greatly with more midfield time, Boyle was terrific and young Duval looks very promising.

What I liked was the constant pressure and high work rate.

A good win. In the Ressies, Jade Cleland was very good and young McKenzie looks likely.

A very good win today by a group of players that really wanted it from the first bounce.
It was so pleasing for the players and the coach that we won today.
They have been working hard without winning.

Tom Keough was simply outstanding and deserved to be BOG.
Brett Turner has played 2 very good games and in fact I thought today it was his best game for the club.His clearance work for the last 2 weeks has been outstanding.
Boyle once again was high in our best players, this kid can Play.
Mitch Duval there is something to like about him,he is going to develop into a handy SANFL player.

Well done to the boys today and great reward for their relentless pressure on the opposition. Well done also to the coaching staff for their faith and belief in the team and the plan. Only the one change from last week but everything worked better today on the bigger oval – and we made far fewer mistakes.
Lots of unsung heroes today: Levicki, Fairlie, Turner, Waite, Duval, Allen, Boyle, etc but BOG was Tom Keough closely followed by Parella. Also, best games for the year from Dunkin and Stevens. Batley and Johnson continued their consistently good form.
It’s 3 years since we beat the Bays but today we wore them down with our run and pressure. By half way through the third Q we had them beaten and from then on we dominated the game. Our defence was composed throughout and kept the reigning premiers scoreless in the third Q and only allowed through 2 goals in the second half.
We now know what they are capable of but, more importantly, they know what they can do when they apply themselves for 4 Qs.

Two other players worth a mention were Patrick Fairlie and Ed Allan, both players aren’t blessed with pace but they found the football today. Allan was very good in his second game.

The only change I would make next week would be a Cleeland for Hupfeld. Cleeland was once again best in the ressies. McKenzie showed something as did Squire.

West Adelaide caused a boilover as it secured its first premiership points in more than a year with a plucky 16-point win against Glenelg at Hisense Stadium.

Without a win since defeating North by two points on July 13 of 2019, the Bloods piled on the pain for the Tigers during the third quarter, booting four goals while holding the reigning premier scoreless.

”I’ll sleep a bit better tonight – I haven’t slept very well since our last win over a year ago,” a relieved Bloods coach Gavin Colville told Channel 7 after the final siren.

”It’s just so rewarding for the players because they have been trying and learning for so long now. The message at three-quarter time was just to keep going with the process. I knew if we stuck at our game plan we would be OK.”

West captain Tom Keough flourished in his team’s three-prong forward line with five goals, as fellow forwards Lyndon Hupfeld and Riley Thilthorpe played important structural roles.

Keough set the tone for his side in the first term with two classy snap shot goals, he then found plenty of space inside 50m early in the second quarter to mark low to the ground ahead of booting his third.

The former Gold Coast Sun restored the lead for the hosts after marking strongly on the lead from a Hupfeld pass before giving West a 13-point lead 7 minutes into the fourth term from his 20m set shot, directly in front.

”It’s nice to finally get a win on the board,” Keough told Channel 7 after the match.

”We knew the work we were doing, we were nearly there, but now it’s nice to just finally get there.

”It was good to get on the end of the few but I was just happy for us to get the win.”

West’s hunger at the stoppages was evident as it made the most of its 47-26 hit out advantage to gain a 40 to 27 edge at the clearances, whilst also posting 48 inside 50 entries to Glenelg’s 31.

Bloods midfielders Jordan Boyle, Brett Turner, Kaine Stevens and Pat Fairlie were instrumental in this, collecting 23 clearances between them.

Murray Waite and Isaac Johnson showed plenty of dash in registering 17 disposals and a goal each while vice-captain Logan Hill was rock solid for West across half-back with 21 possessions.

Glenelg defenders Andrew Bradley, Chris Curran and Max Proud defended tirelessly against the tide as did Michael Virgin, who took 10 marks – at least two of them in a courageous manner – in his return to the side.

Jack Oatey Medallist Matthew Snook also never gave in for the Bays, tallying a game-high 12 clearances to go with his 25 possessions.

It's all good to get the processes right, but nothing builds confidence and momentum like a win, particularly against quality opposition. We've been fairly consistent with the number of inside 50's this year. The challenge now is to increase our reward for effort. 14 goals gets you a greater number of wins than 10 will. Disposal efficiency and scoring efficiency were both excellent yesterday. (despite 3 howlers from one player in the first quarter)
A strong, hard fought win and thoroughly deserved. Congratulations to the coaches and playing group.

The second half was probably the best half of footy we've played in a long time. Really strong efforts around the ball and got on top of their midfield, something we don't do often enough.

After the first quarter I thought we were in trouble. They looked so much better organised than us - they seemed to have an extra player in defence, around the ball and up forward. But we just worked so hard that our pressure started forcing some mistakes and eventually we got the momentum of the game going our way. Even our young players are very hard at it (Fairlie, Johnson, May, Kirk).

Boyle was again fantastic and must be leading our B&F right now. Parella controlled the rucks, Keough made the most of his opportunities, Turner had probably his best game for us, Stevens found some form, Duvall had a superb second half and really looks a player, and Ryan did another good job on McBean.
Our small defenders are still letting us down with disposal (though Dunkin was much better) and we still make some dumb inside 50 entries but that was a really big win for the club and a great reward for a relentless physical approach.
Let's hope we don't slip back this week and keep some real momentum going.

By the way, why do we continue to be smashed by the umpires? It's such a regular occurrence that it really does make rational people wonder.

Again I am sure everyone was thinking here we go again when Glenelg kicked the first 2 goals of the final quarter.
But this years side is mentally tougher as has been shown over the last few weeks. They all have more games in there heads to respond from.
Same Midfield that everyone potted the last two weeks.
Same forward line that everyone potted the last two weeks.
Same back line that everyone potted the last two weeks.
It showed that the slightly bigger ground helped everyone gain more space, forwards were able to lose there opponents a bit better, giving more one on one contests.
The backs were able to spread more to allow us to move the ball out better.
The mids were winning contest after contest to give us forward momentum.
We still had a lot of quick clearances that went straight to the opposition that is something that still needs to be addressed.  
But how good is to win a game.
