West v Glenelg
Central's win yesterday consigns us to our third consecutive wooden spoon.
We had our chances against the Bays in Round 1. Let's hope for a decent showing this week.

It'd be interesting to know if the coach is surprised by our performance this year or if it's what he expected. Pre-season the members were told the club aimed to play finals in 2022. Is that still the aim?

I'd be interested to know if there will be any response from the Coach or the Board for that matter to our third wooden spoon in a row......... (I guess they'll wait until the end of the season!)

Re: West v Glenelg
We are in a similar position to the 2005-2008 years.
We were a basket case then, but we’re able to turn it around through a decent coach (Collins) and some good recruiting.
It took Collins until his 5th season to get us from the bottom to the finals.
I think Gotch has an even bigger challenge to get us moving up the ladder.
Our squad is poor and we need a dozen players to get us competitive again.
Key Position Players and a ruckman must be the priority this summer.

What has surprised me
1. The number of recycled players promoted from the ressies.
2.Why haven’t we promoted players from our U 18’s
3. The lack of imagination by the coaching group to play different players in different positions.

Danger games for the bays. Perhaps we can break their unbeaten streak?? Would Glenelg be resting players?

Good to see Redfern finally get an opportunity.
Should have been in the side about 6 weeks ago!

Ed Allan once again with over 30 touches in the 2s.
Surprised he doesn't get a game.
Keiran Lovell in the 2s still.

Re: West v Glenelg
There are half a dozen players that continually get picked in the league side but offer nothing!
Selection this year has been baffling!
The midfield is really poor. Too many of them don’t find enough of the footy.
Lots of players need to be shown the door at seasons end.
One game to go for the misery to end!

Re: West v Glenelg
Outclassed again in pretty much every element of the game. The Bays bigger, faster, stronger, smarter, more skilful, better prepared, tactically superior, etc.
Luke Redfern had an impressive debut and had us wondering why he wasn’t picked a lot earlier. Selection has been a real issue for us this year. Some very strange decisions. They say the definition of stupidity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.
Special mention to Josh Ryan who kept McBean quiet. Duvall tried up forward in the last half which was good to see. Tom Keough kicked 2 of the best goals of the night, in particular the one from the boundary line at the southern end. But we kicked 3 of our goals in time on of the last Q when the game was done. Ellem getting better every game but a couple of his set shots fell short because he goes back too far on the mark.
Can’t believe how many times the Bays could break our tackles.
Bays had 4 ex Westies in their team.

Re: West v Glenelg
We were simply outclassed last night, however I thought we tried to move the ball quicker than we have for sometime. The effort was there, but the execution wasn’t.
We continue to play the boundary line which we have done all year, why don’t we try bringing the ball through the corridor more.
Redfern was good from half back and he should have played earlier.
I have said most of the year that our selection has been strange and we haven’t tried players in different positions either.
Duvall was finally moved forward in the second half as we didn’t have a marking target and he impressed with 2 goals and it should have been 3.
Our midfield was smashed at the clearances and it’s been an issue all year. The midfield group are very similar, they lack leg speed and their disposal by foot isn’t elite. We need to recruit a couple of midfielders that can kick and have leg speed. Redfern should be tried in the midfield against South.
I did think Joel Stevens had his best game and Ryan was very good.
Brett Turner was a standout last night for the Bays and he has taken his game to a new level and that’s because he has better players around him.
Time for a big clean out
We simply MUST RECRUIT QUALITY PLAYERS NEXT YEAR.

Re: West v Glenelg
Agreed Wolf Pack. There's lots of talk, rightly so, about our lack of quality talls but several of our small players offer very little. One, literally - didn't have a touch in the first half.
Finally Redfern was tried and he looked capable at this level. Once he gets used to the tempo he'll be useful.
Finally Duval was thrown up forward and he looked dangerous.
Ellam showed a bit more. And Joel Stevens looks a better player playing around half forward.
Josh Ryan was our best I reckon, completely blanketed the competition's leading goal kicker. Chamberlain got a fair bit of it in the first half but, along with most of our players, needs to improve his disposal.
Brett Turner got 35 disposals. He never got 35 disposals for us, but then I guess he never played against us.
We will finish the year in exactly the same position we've been in for the last 2 years - miles off the pace and needing many, many good footballers to change anything.

That stat has to be seen alongside 'disposal efficiency'. He has one of the lowest in Glenelg's top 5 ball-getters - an extension from when he was at WA.aldo russian wrote:Brett Turner got 35 disposals.

In the coach's report he mentions that this year he's learned a lot about the playing group. Hopefully it's the same thing that the rest of us have learned.

Interesting that no player has announced a retirement this week……
I would except a massive clean out of players at seasons end.
6 wins in 3 seasons of football.

Re: West v Glenelg
In the coaches Report he admitted a number of things he had done previously at other clubs hasn’t worked for him this year.
I would think there will be a large number of players shown the door and rightfully so.
It’s absolutely imperative that we get better players to the club next year.
We need to be aiming higher when recruiting players.
