Who would you like to be the next coach of West Adelaide?
Next coach
Just curious to see what members here think should or could be our next coach... Now, i don't know the list of applicants but it seems going by rumors Mark Mickan and Ken McGregor are the frontrunners, there are other applicants which i don't know the names of.
The poll will have Other, please specify who that Other might be if you know some thing we don't know.

Re: Next coach
Without being in the interviews I think you can only go on their records, so it surprises me that people choose McGregor over Mickan. Mickan took the Eagles from 7th to 3rd two years later, and took the Bays from 8th to 4th two years later, and then minor premiers the next year. McGregor is unproven.

Re: Next coach
I agree Aldo. Hard to judge McGregor after one year with the Magpies. I would probably be happy with either but I think that some people tend to forget Mickan's solid record.

Re: Next coach
McGregor is my pick from the two because he is younger and just out of the game. His year of coaching will do him the world of good.
Mickan is a little uninspiring IMO, his finals record is not great and the team he coached at Glenelg was a good one.

Re: Next coach
Just joined up here in the hope that someone might know what's going on and when we can expect to hear of the new appointment.
Out of Mickan and McGregor, Mickan would have to be a shoe in. As mentioned earlier, he took both Eagles and Glenelg from near bottom to finals in less than 2 years. I think he departed the Eagles for another role but they quickly went on to win a premiership under Fuller who attributed much of that success to the work Mickan put in. I was in the rooms with my father in law (a mad Eagles supporter) when he publically thanked Mickan after the win. McGregor's first half of last season was appalling and he is far too unproven. There is also a lot of doubt amongst Port players about his ability to coach.
I would be very disappointed if we went with an unproven coach. Look how that ended up with Glenelg.

Re: Next coach
A brief write up...
After retiring as a player Mickan continued to pursue his football interests as a coach. In 1998-99 seasons he coached Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL, achieving 6th and 3rd place finishes. Assistant coaching roles at AFL the Crows and Port Adelaide in the 2000s followed.
In 2006 Mickan was appointed coach of Glenelg on a three year contract. Glenelg finished sixthh in his first year as coach and in 2007 Mickan led the Bays to their first finals appearance since 1999. In the finals they beat Sturt in the Elimination Final before going down to Woodville-West Torrens in the First Semi Final by six points and finished Fourth overall.
In 2008 Mickan was named SANFL coach of the year for Glenelg's rise to the top of the premiership ladder after the minor round.
After a series of disappointing finals' performances in 2009 and 2010 and a belief by the Glenelg board that he could not take the club any further, Mickan was sacked from the Glenelg coaching position on 20 June 2011

Re: Next coach
Well I for one will be very disappointed if McGregor gets it and going by rumours, he seems likely to. Did anyone actually watch him coach Port? He was woeful for a good half of the season and not too inspiring for the second half even though apparently someone stepped in to help him with his game plan. I would describe him as an 'okay' coach in his first year but nothing more than that. Okay and one season of coaching is not good enough.

Re: Next coach
My concern with McGregor is, that with a squad loaded with AFL listed players, the magpies couldn't make the five under his leadership.

Ports squad lacked alot of deoth IMO
What if he could bring 4-5 of their better player with him?

That's if they want to. I've heard many accounts from Port players who don't rate him at all.brodlach wrote:Ports squad lacked alot of deoth IMO

Re: Next coach
Well if the rumours regarding McGregor are true, I envisage a big slide ... downward.
But on a positive note, I'm enjoying reading this board.

Re: Next coach
I think McGregor may be a different coach at Westies as he wouldn't be under the constraints forced on him by Port Power. Also I would hope he would bring some players (key) with him and after all Port did beat Norwood this year!

I really have no preference of one or the other, each has there own style and if either one gets the job I will support him.
