Re: New Coach
Full time coach. Big money suggests extensive search and selection process. Club must have some $. And consider full time is justified ?

Re: New Coach
My gut feeling is that they went into this process with a name in mind but who i do not know.
Given what seems to be SANFL approach to soft cap and reduction in footy costs the full time position took me a bit by surprise but perhaps that the inbuilt cost of coach these days

Was senior coach at Box Hill Hawks for a few years then Development coach with Hawthorn's Academy, until stood down this year due to Covid. Just a thought, he may be way too settled in Melbourne.

Re: New Coach
How about we recruit someone who isn't a wannabe AFL coach.
Surely there are plenty of good ammo and country league coaches that would love a crack at SANFL coaching who aren't interested in using the job as a stepping stone into the AFL.

Re: New Coach
I wouldn't care if we had 10 successive coaches who used the job as a stepping stone to the AFL if they coach us well and with success. Most coaches who achieve some success at our level, no matter where they come from, will attract interest from the AFL.

Re: New Coach
I have no clue but Greg Mellor, if available, would have my vote.
Very clever and knowledgeable school teacher with a great Coaching and football knowledge. Also is a great guy so would attract supporters.
Hard job for the club with this appointment.

"The Club will announce the process for recruiting the Senior Coach in the near future."
They'd want to get a move on seeing as applications have closed.

Another example of how useless the information flows are at Westies.
Why are we not surprised.

Re: New Coach
Thanks Mypaspective. I do wonder why the club couldn't have told us that.
On a positive note, I'm encouraged to see us advertising for a new high performance manager. There's been a question mark over our fitness for quite a while so hopefully this will address any issues.

Re: New Coach
Thanks Myperspective. Much appreciated. Although not on this topic I am concerned about the afl teams rejoining next year. Reduction of our salary cap and its implications on SANFL club lists, the crows asking to reduce their $ to the SANFL coffers next year ( as if SANFL clubs haven’t
had to struggle). We have proved we do NOT need either team in our competition and we should not sacrifice our integrity to stump up the laziness of the afl by them not having their own 2 competition. Now more than ever SANFL need to do everything to ensure ALL their cLubs exist AND are competitive. In my view OUR board should be opposed to any afl team returning.

Re: New Coach
Coolie- i do not disagree with your comments but last time the SANFL basically used tactics on the clubs to get their votes because ALF funding depended on getting Crows/power teams in --- this inducement includes threats to withhold money -- a club with serious salary cap issue got their penalty reduced and others.
Blunt fact is that members/board can decide against but when it comes to a vote the SANFL has the whip hand ($$$$$$) and will/has to do what the AFL wants -- sad truth.
nothing changes just a different day

Re: New Coach
I know SANFL is very keen to have a 10 team comp with the 2 AFL sides back in next year. I’m with you, I don’t like it but we’ll have to wait & see.
It will be interesting when the AFL announce the list sizes for next year. If as expected it reduces to 38 or 40 & allowing for the usual injuries, I would expect (based on 40) that each AFL club will need about 4-6 top up players to field a team each week. This assumption is based on 22 (plus 2 emergencies) required for each AFL game in addition to a couple of injuries to other players
If they are part of the SANFL comp we want them to be competitive without dominating as they have in recent years. The reduced list sizes should help this happen.
The other unavoidable thing is that there will be at least one player in each AFL team on a contract higher than the whole $210K salary cap of the competing SANFL side. Once again we have to accept this even though it seems grossly unfair. There is a good chance we will have Riley Thilthorpe playing against us which hurts (similar to Beechy a few years ago)
Even if several SANFL club League Directors push back against the AFL clubs inclusion plus the reduced SANFL salary cap the Commission make the final decision. There have been examples in the past where the clubs views fall on deaf ears, like the last touch out of bounds rule.
In summary the only power the League Directors have these days is appointing the Commissioners. After that the elected Commission has all the power & authority whether we like it or not.
