Retro Round Empty Retro Round

Post by aldo russian Wed Jul 18, 2018 1:11 pm

In the latest e-newsletter from the club there's a photo promoting Retro Round. It looks like John Ryan coaching, so I'm thinking it's a Reserves game from the 70s? Can anyone identify any of the players in the shot? I reckon Mark Weideman is one, partly obscured.

The Jumper being used is from 1980.Trevor Hughes last year as coach.

here is abit of a report on 1980

" The Season of Injuries "
The 1980 season could well go down as the
year of injuries. We played 52 players throughout
the whole season, approximately twice as many
as the premiership side Port Adelaide.
But even with this tremendous set back when
on a Thursday night if the selectors could get away
without changing one particular line in the
complete side they thought themselves very lucky.
We still had our moments of glory, six wins, one
against Sturt where we kicked 10 goals in the
First term shows we have the making of a top five
side given our share of injuries and not the in-
credibly bad run 1980 unloaded on us.
Trevor Hughes took it in his stride, never com-
plained and set an extremely good example to
player and committeemen alike and must be given
high praise for the way he tried to put a side
together and if hours counted for any premier-
ship points then Trevor would have gone top. I
am sure Trevor will be around W.A. forever, and
any undertaking he takes on the players, commit-
tee and supporters wish him well and loads of
success.
And now 1981 ā€” Neil Kerley comes home.
Peter Meuret stays home. Geoff Morris renews
his contract. Roger Luders signs for three years.
This has happened and more will. West Adelaide
are looking for your support in '81 because we will
be proud and successful and this does not happen,
it is made to happen with your help.
KERLS BACK ā€” WHY ARN'T YOU

DOUG THOMAS, General Manager

Didn't we wear that jumper from '74 - '80? Fos changed it to vertical stripes and Kerley changed it back to the sash. I'm still thinking it looks more like John Ryan than Hughes. I don't think Hughes ever wore a moustache.

Keddie brought in the red shorts but I'm pretty sure Fos brought in the stripes. There's a footy card of Dexter from 1973 and the guernsey is still a sash.

Iā€™m with u Aldo it looks far more like Slippers (Johnny Ryan) than Trevor Hughes with Kevin Beswick front & centre & I think No24 was Alan Dunlop so it probably was a Reserves game or training.

I don't reckon Mp, I don't recall Beswick having blonde hair, but Dunlop did and No.24's is black. I wondered if the guy front and centre might have been Lou Reynolds.
Blacky, could the guy behind Ryan (we only see half his head) be you?

Having another look I agree with 24 not being Dunlop but front & centre is definitely Bessy I reckon. Unmistakable face.

I am at a loss as to know why the club would bring out a jumper from the end of the Trevor Hughes era, with all dew respect to Trevor Hughes, that period of time for the club was a very win less time, wins were very, very, few and far between, myself, i would of liked to see the same jumper with the Foster Williams seventies logo on the jumper, we finished 5th in 76 and third in 77, with Trevor Grimwood taking out the Magarey Medal in 77
