Our worst performance for the year. The football we are playing in all grades is a disgrace. Embarrassing, pathetic rubbish is what we are dishing up week after week.

I’m not sure if Colville can coach or not as we have given him nothing to work with.

We are the laughing stock of the SANFL yet again.

Seemed like a great idea to replace dedicated, passionate, hard working West Adelaide people with a corporate board of outsiders with little commitment. How good has that been? We were told we needed this, we needed to forge ahead. You can blame Covid 19 for a lot of things, but you can't blame it for the abject failure at this Club in every department. We've been conned. My opinion.

I agree. The absence of hope will eventually kill off many supporters' willingness to turn up week after week. I agree with what most posters are saying about our on field performances. Since 2015 they have progressively been getting poorer. It is frustrating and embarrassing, yet the board's lack of communication towards club members is even more alarming. During tough times, like we are experiencing now, good communication is crucial. Without on field success, members/supporters need to feel valued. I raised this issue at the last AGM. Murray wrote the following in his letter to members last May.

It is my intention to publish a President’s Message as soon as possible after each formal board meeting is held. This will provide you with certainty about the timing of when you can expect updates on the activities of the board. Formal board meetings are held on the last Monday of every month, with the most recent one having occurred on Monday 27th May.

Your directors are currently formulating plans and strategies for each of these key areas of the club:
Members and Sponsors.
Finance Management.
The Oval Precinct.
The Clubrooms and Venue Precinct.
Governance, People and Culture.
Football.
These areas are discussed at length in our board meetings

Since this promise, there have only been 5 reports. (4 written/1 video) There should have been 14. Furthermore, the letters to members which were posted contained very little detail.

In his most recent post, Murray made the following statement:

I can assure you that the Board of Directors is not sitting idle. We are, along with our CEO, continuing to uncover and explore more ways of keeping the club alive. The energy and dedication on display at the Board meeting held by video hook-up on Monday 30th March was an inspiration.

Unfortunately, I don't feel inspired or hopeful.

I think communication could be greatly improved by:

Making sure that each and every board meeting's discussions are reported to members.

Rather than Murray write the summary, have each of the directors report on their particular area of responsibility - this would provide members with a more complete picture.

Directors mingling with the punters on the terraces. Let us know that you are there and care about what happens on the field.

Sorry for hi-jacking this thread on the Centrals game, but what more could I add that hasn't already been said.

I make no comment on the above, but suggest there's a problem when lifelong West supporters are made to feel unwelcome at the Club by people with little background with us. In my research for my book, this has been a constant theme from many I've spoken to.

People who have rarely missed a game in decades have stopped attending or are saying it's their last year.

This isn't a time to lay blame, just posted in the hope that long-term passionate supporters are made to feel welcome at the Club.

Meanwhile, the Club won't publicise even a link to my book without reading the whole book first. That is their right, but extending it beyond that is highly disappointing.

We all need to reach out and work together at such a low time and I hope the Club will change approach and do that.

What is really hard to fathom is why we keep doing the same unsuccessful things week after week. We take a mark or get a free between the centre line and our forward 50 arc and we kick inside 50 to an outnumbered contest, or to their extra player. I would estimate 90% of these entries cost us possession. Do we have no idea how to do this differently?
But on top of this sort of unthinking approach and our atrocious disposal (including by hand), yesterday there was a distinct lack of urgency and effort, a lack of genuine chasing, a lack of strong tackling, and a lack of leadership. Why do our talls get worked under the ball so easily in marking contests? Why didn't anyone try to block the player tagging Stevens all day, or put some physical pressure on him? Why do experienced players kick blindly out of defence?
The one positive note was that I thought Squire showed something in his first game, mainly a clean pair of hands in close and a good physical presence.

Seems like Sturt are travelling poorly also, so we have a chance to rebound at home. If we can bring the run we showed against Glenelg and North, I think we can win

Agree about Squire, but we need some running ball carriers.

I thought that Murray Waite at least tries to run and carry to create. Doesn't always work, but he gives it a go.

Sturt did beat Centrals by 11 goals though Lee. We were lucky Centrals didn't beat us by 8 goals.
We had 3 scoring shots in the 2nd half, against a side that hadn't won a game.

Depends which team turns up - the team against North and Glenelg or yesterday's.

I agree that logically we are up against it, but.....

Bruce you make some very good points in your post.
I  was really hoping that Derek Bonner our new Football Director would have informed us all on what is happening from a Football point view.
We supporters need to receive communication urgently as to what the club is doing to turn things around.
We need some hope and quickly. The silence is deafening.

It is a worry that passionate West Adelaide People are not directing the ship.
This is the first year in over 20 years that I have not attended a game.
I’m still a member but will not renew next year if the club continues to go down this path.
Time for those in charge to step up and sell some hope to the members and supporters.

West v Centrals - Page 2 Empty Re: West v Centrals

Post by Thiele on Wed Aug 26, 2020 6:20 pm

Kicking with the breeze in the first term, our intensity was very good, resulting in two goals from tackle pressure in f50. We were also able to have repeat f50 entries with sound defensive structure behind the ball. We didn’t however use the ball as well as we needed to and played into the oppositions hands by kicking the ball long and high (to where they had the spare man behind the ball). Sometimes this is unavoidable (when kicking under pressure) however we needed to be more brave and change our direction a little more, particularly from stationary balls. We took at 12 point lead into quarter time. Our second quarter was inconsistent. Our good was very good and we had some strong passages of play to score. However our skills were below expectation and we had some lapses with our defensive intent. I could sense a level of frustration and disappointment at half-time (although leading by 9 points) that we weren’t playing as well as we wanted both as a team and individually. In hindsight I should have addressed this more explicitly. Yes, we were not at our best, but winning games is not always about being at your best, rather its about persisting and fighting to the end- maintaining effort and focusing on what’s ahead, not what has happened. The start of the third term was very disappointing. Two easy goals to the opposition on the back of lackluster pressure as stoppages and then followed by poor work rate. Our confidence seem to drop from here and we looked overwhelmed at the contested ball. Too many skills errors, fumbles and missed tackles. Most disappointing was our work rate. We simply didn’t have enough of our midfield pushing back to assist the defence and our forwards could not apply enough pressure to keep the ball in f50. Whilst we regrouped at ¾ time and rallied with the first goal of the last term, the opposition gained a quick reply through a 25m penalty- again another lapse in concentration and a controllable error. Unfortunately again, our heads dropped and we appeared to lack any confidence. We must learn to respond better in these situations. Too many players, including some of our leaders, dropped off in the basics (work rate, skills, one takes, tackles, body language). We looked and played like a team that had given up and had no belief in our ability to turn around an average day. Ultimately, the remainder of the quarter was full of errors and poor decision making.

This matched highlighted a deficiency in three key areas; an ability to consistently do the fundamentals of the game at the required standard for SANFL football, a willingness to live a team-first mentality every moment of the game, and a resilient mindset when challenged. As supporters, please do not think this performance displayed a lack of care for the Club and success. Your players do very much care and have given every bit of energy to the Club over a long period. Rather, what I see is at times a level of despair and lack of confidence which manifests as disappointment. Whilst stopping short of making excuses, given our tough road in recent times, this is perhaps not surprising. But we must and will address this. It is my job to show the players that their hard work is and will pay-off; that they have capacity to win games by simply scrapping and fighting, even if our execution isn’t perfect; that they have the capacity to meet any challenge in-game and respond effectively; and most of all, if they can believe and hold on to a team-first mentality (even when things aren’t going well for themselves) they can always have a contribution.

As supporters, I understand the depths of frustration at seeing our performance. I and the players wear this burden, perhaps more than some of your realise. Every week we are learning and most definitely trying to improve- I can only ask that you take my word on this and to continue to support us when and where you can.

Really good report from the coach I reckon. I think we need to hear this sort of thing, to be reminded and assured that the supporters aren't alone in our passion and frustration.
