Yes I think that is closer to being correct TAARS. I don’t know who would have been pushing for the Wolves but I recon DOUG would have had a fair bit to do with it.

I think you are correct on that. Doug had his fingers in everything then and for many years after Rolling Eyes

I'm almost certain we wore the sash under Keddie and that we changed to the stripes under Fos, who started in '74. (Cahill wasn't until '85.) Without checking, I reckon the Wolves thing started during that period too and I reckon it was at the instigation of Oberon Pirak and Ken Eustice because I can remember the justification for the change was that they thought the bloodhound looks like a dopey dog and they wanted something more fearsome. And I don't think we ever reverted to the bloodhounds, when we dumped Wolves we just used Bloods.

Could well be too Aldo. My memory is foggy that far back added to the fact I went overseas for 2 years in 74 then moved to NSW until 93.

I am certain that Aldo is right.
I have memories of Kevin Beswick & Ray Hayes running around in the vertical stripes.

How long did we wear the stripes then. I have a photo of Lee Ravlich wearing them. He played from 75 to 79.

I thought that when Kerls came back to coach in 1981, he changed the guernseys back to the traditional black with red sash.

That's my recollection too Wolfman. We'd just need to find a photo from '79 or '80 to confirm.

Lee,
An amazing thing I picked up about our 1979 season, the first year under Trevor Hughes. We won the wooden spoon. But we won 7 games. We also drew one game. And we lost 6 games by 11 points or less. Surely the unluckiest wooden spoon in history. If we'd snuck home in those 6 close losses and the draw we would have finished equal second on the ladder.
We also defeated the two Grand Finalists of 1979 in consecutive weeks late in the season. That was a top quality wooden spoon that one.

I've found the team photo from the 1980 annual report online (but can't work out how to post it here) and we are all in vertical stripes still, so it was definitely changed by Kerley back to the sash for the 1981 season.

Ticking over 72,000 words.  Lockdown has seen a rush.

Still a long way to go, finishing, fact-checking, editing, etc.

Running out of space to fit everything in, so thinking of a follow up for player biographies, stats, etc.

Currently writing a chapter about Doug.  Happy to hear any stories, so fire away.

Didn't Doug wander on to the ground waving a cow-bell, to end a quarter, because the siren didn't work? It had been croaking away for weeks of course! I can't remember the particular occasion, date, etc....! Smile

At last something I can contribute to Smile

For the striped guernsey I have:

(Not really sure about 1973 and earlier but)

74, 75, and 76 with no badges.
77 SANFL with Centenary badge and standing wolf badge with "BLOODS".
78 and 79 with just standing wolf badge.
80 with wolf head badge but with "WOLVES" text above.

Then 1981 back to the sash.

This is based on footage, newspaper articles, and annual reports (ie, things with dates) so I'm reasonably confident the above is right. Not a guarantee though and always happy to learn a bit more.

That is very helpful and aligns with one of the sources I'm trying to decide between.

Thanks!

Badge quirks aside (like standing wolf to wolf's head and Bloods to Wolves to Bloods again) the years should be pretty spot on.

1974 article and 1980 annual report pics:

Then there are footy cards from 1973 that have the sash (but they are known to sometimes use older pictures even today so I can't say that for sure until I find something dated is all).

Getting closer to completion.

If anyone has any interesting photos that haven't been widely seen and are very good quality and interest, can they PM me, please?

Not far off completion. Within 2 weeks it will be available for pre-ordering.

Hundreds of hours and anything but a 'dry' history, it will take you behind the scenes and you'll read a lot of new details about our history until now. Great photos and stories.

It's been a big investment and I hope everyone will buy a copy to help cover some of the costs. When it's publicised, please spread the word.

I hope Bloods' fans will love it.

The crowd-funding website with all details for ordering, etc, will be up next Monday.

The book is about 90,000 words and has nearly 100 photos, with plenty of new information about some of the great issues we've faced and lots of 'behind the scenes' descriptions, especially of the past 35 years, although there's plenty of our history before that.

Most of all, it's a celebration of the club we all love and the players we idolised.

It's been a lot of work, but a labour of love and I'm so grateful for the support of some great people.
