2018 Anniversaries Empty 2018 Anniversaries

2018 marks:

- 60 years since we lost the Grand Final to Port by 2 points.
- 50 years since Murray Weideman's first year coaching us.
- 40 years since Fos Williams's last year coaching us.
- 30 years since Kevin Morris's first year coaching us.
- 10 years since Andy Collins's first year coaching us.

1978 was Fos's last year and a real disappointment after our steady climb over the previous four years, and a Preliminary Final finish in '77. I can remember him saying to members at the start of the '77 season that in his first year ('74) we finished bottom of the bottom five, in '75 we finished top of the bottom five, in '76 we finished bottom of the top five so in '77 he expected us to finish top of the top five. And we weren't that far short.

For season '78 we lost both Glynn and Darryl Hewitt, and David Gurney; and Greg Hollick and Jim Buckley only played 4 games each and Trevor Pierson only 7 (having played 22 in '77.) We did pick up Graeme Robertson and Norm Hagan, and Mark Weideman debuted but we looked slow and spent. There was also talk around the club that Fos was struggling to see who the players were on the far side of the ground and was asking those sitting with him to identify them. Having seen Grimwood play out of his skin in '76 and '77, and Ray Hayes and Bruce Stevenson terrify the opposition in defence, 1978 was a sad end to a very entertaining period of footy for us.

Looking back on this, Weideman was a very big name recruit to the SANFL. He'd captained Collingwood's last premiership ten years prior.
I can remember his stirring pre-game addresses to the players, as he stood on a rub-down table in his footy gear, the change room packed with supporters.
And after several years out of the finals he took us back into them in his first year.
