Mallee Footnall League Empty Mallee Footnall League

We're just lost one of our country leagues with the closure of the Mallee Football League.

A sad day for all involved.

The loss of the Mallee Football League is not only a loss to the communities involved but it encapsulates one of the major issues facing the SANFL and by association clubs like West Adelaide.
These leagues are not only the direct link SANFL clubs have with the country players but also their supporters. For every country lad/girl playing in the SANFL there is an extended family that, in all probability, would follow the SANFL team they are playing for. It gives the SANFL team aligned to that country league a presence in the area and helps shore up support for the SANFL competition. Games played in the country zone attract interest (e.g. Loxton) and keep the SANFL relevant in the area.
Young players, yet to fulfil their talent, may drop out as the direct bond within communities is broken.
Allegiances will move away from the SANFL to the other competition. A loss, that affects not only the SANFL club aligned to that league but the fabric of the SANFL itself.

Some excellent points, Coolie. No doubt grassroots football is under threat in many areas. Changing demographics often contribute to this situation. The Mallee Football League identified the threat and was determined to avoid closure, but was unsuccessful.

I noticed in the above article that the League was seeking community feedback. This caused me to think that maybe our club should be surveying members. At the moment communication seems to be almost non-existent, so a well-constructed survey/questionnaire would be a good way to promote communication. A draft could be posted on the website to allow members to suggest additions/changes. Maybe the survey could be split up into the 8 areas covered by each of the directors. Perhaps the results could be discussed at a members forum in which each director would have the opportunity to respond to targeted questions/comments by members.

Agreed a survey would be useful BUT in my opinion such an action needs to be driven by the Board and there in lies the conundrum. The Board seems reticent to engage with members let alone invite feedback that, on the face of it, could be embarrassing for the Board. We have 2 member elected Board members and one Director of Membership. I would have thought it in their role to deliver the initiative. Your suggestion is very worthwhile but how to is the issue
