Round 15 v Port Adelaide Empty Round 15 v Port Adelaide

Post by Lee Harradine Tue Jul 12, 2022 8:18 am

Port have been really struggling lately. They're also playing away in the AFL so will take an extra 1 or 2.

This ought to be a real chance, but..... ???

Port's team would have to be the weakest I've seen.

So few listed players.

Surely.....?

Port have 8 players on their AFL bench at this stage.
I would expect 2 or 3 of those to play in the SANFL team.
Realistically, this is probably our last chance to get a win this season. We’ve got games against Glenelg, North, South and Norwood to come.
If we go down this week, a winless season is on the cards…..

Zero wins for the season. Plenty of other teams have "achieved"  the same fate. Hopefully there's a way for get rid of the board and coach in one fell swoop. The CEO turning up all spritely.. thinking positive does F All in regards to the results.

The bar could not get much lower. The last win against Port was Rd 17, 2018, prior to the installation of the new board. We won by 26 pts and had 27 scoring shots from 53 inside 50s. Beech kicked 7 goals. We also beat them in Rd 7 by 32 pts. and had 10 individual goal scorers. This Port team looks extremely vulnerable and with the switch from Alberton, surely we can win this. Surprisingly, Port is only paying $1.32. to our $3.40. or maybe not so surprising given our current record.

I have been deeply disappointed throughout the 2022 season, but a loss here will move beyond this. Come on Bloods, for f....sake show some fight. You know, like the mighty, fighting Bloods of yore.

Got a real good feeling about this weekend. If we play a fast exciting brand of footy this weekend we can certainly get our first win. I think this a game a few of the younger guys like morrish , park and Kennedy can have breakout games. Will be bringing the family and expect a good contest from our boys.

Rapt to see Kennedy finally selected but don't understand why now, and not weeks/months earlier when he was in red hot form. There's been an obvious change in thinking at the selection table in the last couple of weeks which is welcome but well overdue.

Post by Lee Harradine Fri Jul 15, 2022 7:46 pm

I haven't said this at all this season, but I think we should win tomorrow.

Reasons:

Not many AFL players and a lot of top ups.

Port's form has been awful.

We should have more to play for.

Can't see Port putting the bodies on the line as much.

OTOH, we're likely to be smashed in ruck.

Fingrrs crossed.

Glad to be wrong on a winless season. It’s a relief for sure but not much more. Hopefully gives some confidence for last few games.

Yes Finally a win. Hartlett played his best game for us.
Brand,Keough and Beech in the 2nd half in the best players.
Corbett did a couple of good things.

Adam Hartlett did Most of the coaching today.

Enormous relief! It was great to see us respond when we were challenged. Congratulations to all players, coaches and supporters.
Hopefully, the players gain some confidence from this win. It is really important that we remain competitive for the remaining 4 matches against much better opposition. Three of them are home games, so let's hope crowd numbers
also improve. (as well as the weather)

PS
North Melbourne also won. Another group of very happy/relieved supporters.

The best thing about that win was its decisiveness.
I was hoping they would hang on with Port playing (relatively) well with the wind, but it was a solid win in the end.

Is this the first time Gotch has coached from the boundary line ?

Really happy for the players and staff and fans to get to enjoy themselves after a game.
I thought Hartlett was our best again (his back half of the year has been great), Beech's second half probably won it for us and Ryan had his best game since returning. Brand was also good, Gore was dangerous, effective and very hard it, Kennedy did some nice things in a handy debut and Corbett was very useful. Kicked 3, gave 1 or 2 others out, created chances at ground level with his contests in packs and crunched anyone who got in his way.
Not a high standard game by any stretch but....beggars and choosers.

Great win and a relief for all, especially the players.
Onwards and upwards from here, the mix on the field looks good and momentum is everything - hopefully the start of a good finish to wrap up the season.

Great to win at last. The best thing is we're starting to see some players emerge, but our best players are still our veterans. Port's side was as weak a team as they've ever fielded, so let's keep things in perspective.

However, you can only beat whoever is there, so well done to get the monkey off the back.

Glenelg next week will be a good indicator, so let's hope we appriach it with renewed confidence.

Hit outs: Port 59, West 11.
Is it worth giving Steene a crack in ruck now for the rest of the year, get some games into him with an eye to next year, rather than continue with these very poor performances? I'd ruck he and Barnett when he returns from U18 duty.

Also, does it say anything about the importance or unimportance of ruck men when you can lose the hit outs so comprehensively and win by 5 goals?

Good question, Aldo.

This is what I posted before the game:
