Round 11 West v Crows Empty Round 11 West v Crows

Post by Wolf Pack Mon Jun 13, 2022 12:36 pm

We probably played our best game of the year against Glenelg.

Probably not going to be any forced changes.

I would like to see Cade Kennedy in the side with only 9 games to go.

We also need to get a look at Gay, Rubcock and Mattingly at some point in my opinion.

Crows also had the week off and will have a strong side on the park.

Can we actually get a win this week?

Would be nice………

I hope the whole club, football department and board, used the week off to assess our position and make some decisions about what should happen in the next 3 months.

If all our injured players pass fitness tests then Hill, J.Ryan and Couroupis should come in for Morrish, Karpany and Rundle.

Well, I still don't understand the logic of possibly playing C. Fairlie or Karpany or Steele ahead of Cade Kennedy. It's not like we have so many crack midfielders and smalls that it's a hard group to break into.
It will also be interesting to see if they ruck someone other than Cleeland against Strachan. Strachan killed us last time.

Good 1st half, pity the team did not come out to play 2nd half. Terrible 3rd with the wind.
Loss 23 and sturts losing streak record in serious danger of being beaten.
Clearly the issue is largely mental as we f do not play 4 qtrs too often.

Though a promising effort at Glenelg, I kind of expected the outcome, given the administrators are too busy "leaving no stone unturned".
I see in the outer that many stones have turned, along with the removal of the old scoreboard - but I see there are many still yet to be even touched.
H.Hartlett certainly hasn't been the augmentation I was expecting this season - that kick across ground to centre in the 3rd.....eeek.
But really, how do you beat a side with an in-form AFL ruckman = Strachan.

I was really impressed with our game against Glenelg two weeks ago.
Today, we continued that form in the first quarter and we led at half time.
We played some really good footy in the first half.
However, we capitulated again in the second half.
10 goals to 1 is really disappointing.
Going to be very difficult to get off the bottom with Central winning today.
The streak at 23 and a 4th spoon is looking likely…..
Worst crowd I’ve ever seen at Richmond.
Would have been 500, and that’s being generous.

Today's crowd is a massive concern. I agree, Wolf Pack, 500 would be my guess. I wonder how many of us will be there to see our next win. Centrals' win today puts it 2 games and percentage ahead of us, so we are red hot faves to take out our 4th consecutive, wooden spoon. Could it get any worse? Well, Sturt chalked up 8 consecutive wooden spoons between 1989 and 1996. (24 wins) So, yes it can. As for losing streaks, the Nangwarry Saints just broke a run of 106, stretching all the way back to 2014. Nangwarry has a population of 500, about the size of our crowd today.

Very good first half where we moved the ball quickly and we won the clearances, however after half time it was a non event. Strahan completely took over in the Ruck and was BOG.
I thought we went into the game one tall short and again it was in our forward line.
Keough was very good in defence. Edwards played his best game for the club. McKenzie showed he will get better if he has support from other key position forwards.
Our lack of effort in the last qrt was so evident.

Again Strachan killed us. Again we played Cleeland against him. Wouldn't you be inclined to try something different that MIGHT work instead of doing the same thing that failed badly last time? Apparently not.
We did play some good direct footy in the first half, but half-way through the 2nd quarter they stopped our flow and we never recaptured it.

We really don't have an effective midfielder now without Carmichael. Stevens was our best mid today I reckon and is coming along, but Squire and Fairlie just aren't creative or damaging enough. Hartlett has been a disappointment. 6 disposals to half time and not quality ones either. Not sure if he's carrying an injury but he looks like he was labouring out there and I think he did his hammy late in the piece.
The poor decisions at selection were shown up once again. Will anyone at the club, either at Board level or in the football department, admit that this year has been a disaster, like the 3 years before it, and accept responsibility? Will anyone admit this isn't working and step aside or stand others down?

I’m not really sure what the alternative to Cleeland in the ruck is…
Babic played in the 2s and had 2 kicks and failed to take a mark yesterday.
We simply don’t have a strong ruckman which has been a problem all year.
We did get Walters but he has disappeared……
Overall, I think we recruited well this year. Brand has been the best recruit in the comp and will win our best and fairest. Carmichael was outstanding.
Park and Edwards from Glenelg have been good. Hartlett as been solid in the games he has played. Delahunty, Mattingly,, Gay, Rubcock and Corbett have potential.

There is no doubt we are seeing glimpses of improvement in the way we play in the past month but we need results.
As each week goes by, more and more supporters are dropping off.

I would have tried McKenzie from the start Wolf Pack. I'm not saying he's the answer but he may have done something that was more successful against Strachan. It's the reluctance to try things rather than simply repeat failed strategies that confounds me.

We played some great footy in the first half. Loved the way we came back at the Crows when they kicked with the wind in the second Q and we booted 3 goals in time on to go to the long break clearly the better team. Our tackling was first class and we harassed the Crows into error.
What we didn’t know then was that we were spent.
The Crows would have gone into their rooms at half time to be greeted by a large team of medicos, masseurs, trainers, physios, podiatrists, psychologists, financial advisors, tax planners, aroma therapists and wellness gurus. Suitably refreshed they then proceeded to kick the next ten goals of the game while we could only manage a single goal and that at the 25 minute mark of the last Q.
Centrals win against the Eagles has not only consigned us to the 2022 wooden spoon but hyped up the reigning premiers for their game against us next week.

There is something strange with the crowd numbers. I was told they count the players and officials and their families who are given free tickets (which account for at least 300 of the crowd), but seasoned West people such as blacky and so many of us on here have estimated crowds at our ground for decades and all think the crowd was closer to 500 than 1200.

Something is strange.

At the end of the year our crowd figures will be claimed as being an average of (say) 1400. Take out the Loxton Russell Ebert game down to a normal crowd and the 1400 will be about 1100 and I'd say that is an overstatement. Loyal supporters have stopped going.

Not a chance there was 1000 people at the ground yesterday.
Smallest crowd I have ever seen at Richmond and I have been going for 30 years.
As mentioned, the familiar faces are not going anymore.
Who could blame them!!!

The number1200 would have included Norwood supporters. Once they left barely 500 stayed. (I figured about 25 crows supporters). More worrying was the number of bloods supporters leaving mid way through the last quarter. The 1 pm start is rubbish. The club was nearly empty - reduced revenue. Why does the Board accept timing of games that is detrimental to the Club’s revenue. Time for SANFL to have a hard look at the entire product lest Clubs like Westies will fold.

I suppose we should officially note that 23 is the longest consecutive losing streak in our history.

Last year we didn't kick a goal in a game, first time for well over 100 years.

We are consigned to our 4th consecutive wooden spoon and have won 6 of our last 60 odd games, whether the opposition had more staff or not.

We have always accepted mediocrity.  We shouldn't any longer.  We need some communication as to who is taking responsibility.

What is our financial position?

Is the Club worried about local supporters no longer attending?

The change to a business Board has been soectacularly unsuccessful.

Should we be worried about our existence?

Please communicate with the members

The Members are not updated on a regular basis.
Considering we have won 6 games in 3 and a half seasons, it’s disappointing.
Why can’t the club hold a members night during the season??
The lack of communication is really poor when we are struggling like we are.

As frustrating as Saturdays loss was considering how good we started… it was good to see some younger players such as morrish and park stand up in the backline and have breakout games. Need to respond this week against a woodville team who will be out for blood after losing to centrals.

Can someone outline the benefits of a "Business Board" to me please. I understand it's a business but wouldn't we be better suited to West or at least football people making all the strategic decisions?

Couldn't agree more, CP. It seems that they don't need many true West Adelaide football people around the Club these days. I guess they have a plan. It's just that nobody knows what it is!
