trial v Norwood Empty trial v Norwood

Post by aldo russian Tue Mar 08, 2022 10:50 am

Yes it's only a trial game, and who knows how strong a team we'll field, but what are we hoping to see?
Last year's trial form ended up being a good indication of how our season was going to go, so this week I'd just like to see us look more likely to score goals when we go forward, and to be able to maintain possession of the ball moving it from one end of the ground to the other.

I would like to see a key forward who can take a contested mark and kick a few goals.
A better system where we can move the ball quicker and a skill level that is markedly better than the last 3 dismal seasons.
What frustrates me the most is seeing a completely empty forward 50 when we have the ball across the middle of the ground. I am sure that this won’t change because it’s all about team defence but it doesn’t work when our team has been so poor and it is awful to watch!!
I don’t think anyone is expecting miracles but we must be competitive this year.

No injuries, some promising form from one or two new recruits and a positive feeling at the style we play.

I’m looking to our forward line structure. For the past 3 years we have been to small with nothing to kick to.
We have recruited Marslen and Corbett and if you add Ellam,McKenzie,
Lemmey and Keough we surely must have 3 marking targets. It’s also means Beechie can play as a half forward flanker which is his best position.

We will also have a new half back line with Brand at CHB and then we have Park,Welsh,Couroupis,May and Redfern vying for the half back flanks.
We also need a replacement for Duval, maybe our new recruit Delahunty or McKenzie could be given an opportunity as he maybe squeezed out of the forward line.

Lee,

Bayleigh Welsh is from the Dandenong Stingrays. I watched him in the trial game against SPOC and while he didn’t get much of the ball he has the body and footy smarts to be given an early opportunity at SANFL level

In reference to this weeks trial games I find that I am in mixed desires.

I normally discount trial game forms due to using multiple players and the Coaches quite rightly playing various players in multiple roles to gain insight into their capabilities.

Having said that I feel we need a strong performance (win or lose) in both games to generate supporters interest and support going into the new season.

What is other thoughts ???

I do think we have to show something to give the supporters hope at least. That said it is a trial game and I will get serious about watching them when they get serious about playing. My main hope is we don't get injuries in these games like the past few years. Then turning up for Round 1 with multiple outs due injury. We need to get some early wins or we will have no supporters left.

Teams for Saturday are on the website.

The only new recruits I can see in the League team are:

Brand
Edwards
Marslen.

Kobe Ryan, a gun U18 is also named. Nick Couroupis is also named and looks promising.

No Hamish yet.

The Reserves have several of the recruits playing.

The league team looks awfully similar to last year……
As mentioned, not many new faces in the side and several players who have had plenty of chances😳
Hamish Ellem loses number 59 and gets number 29.
Would be nice if a bit of Roger Luders rubbed off on him 😆

Thanks. I believe Mattingly came to us with an ACL from last season and won't play until much later.

What is the point of playing so many players in a trial that we know aren't League standard? (I count 9.) God help us if we field a side like that when the real stuff starts.

The worry for me is that the side looks significantly weaker than last year,
Last years side won 2 games.
We can only hope that some of the players can take their game to another level.

Just want to inform posters that a few players have had close contacts with Covid and are not available to play this week. I'm sure it's the same with other clubs.

First Hit Out of the year.
Not a lot to take out of it. 25 point loss.
Positives-
Cleeland was probably one our best in the ruck.
Young Ryan (no. 64) was impressive.
Brand looked solid.
Good to see Isaac Johnson back.
Negatives-
The midfield was smashed. Stevens leaves an enormous hole.
We must find a big body to put in the middle. Keough or Hartlett maybe.
For 3 qtr our key forwards were poor. Ellem, Beech and Lemmey couldn’t get near it but a poor midfield makes it difficult.
Skills are still poor. Too many times we turn it over and take the wrong option.
The jury is out on several players who just don’t look like they are good enough at League Level.
